Artist Statement
Storytelling and Visual Narrative has been the cornerstone of human culture for as long as we can remember. Through a diverse range of work, I construct narratives that encapsulate being a young adult transitioning from childhood. I am fascinated by the idea of ‘playtime’ and how play can be a platform of therapeutic self-expression that helps organize the chaos and complexities of social living. I began to conjure narratives inspired by themes derived from Cervantes’ Don Quixote. The author explores illusions and romanticized constructs and implores the reader to wonder if the fantastical stories we conjure are just as real, if not more, than the life we lead as humans. I intend to investigate this question further through my work. To empower others to never stop questioning, with the burning curiosity of a child.
With a background in illustration, I utilize graphite, digital collage, impressionist painting techniques on two dimensional materials/surfaces and ceramics. Many pieces are created through lengthy research and conceptual world building process. Each work displays a surrealist way of thinking to transport the viewer to another realm through vivacious characters, mark making, dramatic color schemes, and a flare of realism. It is important to remain curious, to investigate and to document the state of unknowing.
